good wednesday morning. welcome to news channel 8 today. i'm gene ramirez. >> and i'm gayle guyardo. just 12 days before the iowa caucuses, republican presidential front runner donald trump is getting a key endorsement. sarah palin is endorsing trump calling him an honored man. however the timing is raising some questions. palin's oldest son track was arrested and accused of punching his girlfriend in the face. at this hour, investigators are trying to determine what started a fire at a home near valley forge.

may be alive and okay thanks to her cat. neighbors tell us she was asleep when the fire started and it was her cat who woke her up. and a live look at downtown tampa this morning. it's beautifully lit up but it is cold outside. the coldest night of the winter so far. and a freeze warning is in place for parts of the area. meteorologist leigh spann has a look at where it's coldest right now. >> well, definitely north of i- 4. that's where you have the potential of seeing below freezing temperatures and maybe scraping the windshield. places away from the immediate coast, the freeze warning goes until 9:00 this morning. so four and a half more hours where you could possibly be below freezing. a closer look, inverness, brooksville, aaron area of pasco county. the reason i don't think it's going to be quite that cold south of i-4, a thin layer of clouds.

we've got one of the parts of the exit ramp blocked but you can still exit just one lane taken away. and another than that, six minutes between university and clark. that's a look at weather and traffic. and now back to gene. >> thank you. right now, we are experiencing the coldest morning in the bay area so far this year. people are bundling up as they head out to work and school and you probably should too. ryan hughes joins us live now from tampa international airport. this is bizarre because people typically come to our area escaping the cold but it's supposed to be cold here all day long. >> reporter: gene, good morning to you. very cold here all day long. so naturally people will want to escape florida and perhaps go to warmer climates like the cayman islands. freeze warnings are in effect for parts of the bay area.

people bundled up in downtown tampa. and we have showed you video like this over the past few weeks as temperatures dip below 40s but this morning is now the coldest we have seen this winter. again you just heard from meteorologist leigh spann our local counties under a warning are pasco, hernando and citrus. so of course if you are going out this morning, pull out the hats and the gloves this morning, perhaps the boots, and put on a pot of hot coffee or tea because you will certainly need it this morning. back to you for now. >> yeah, the kind of morning that you are happy you sprang for the seat warmer in the car, right? thank you. well developing this morning, a murder mystery in manatee county involving the death of a young woman. detectives found the 23-year- old's body off bishop harbor road in palmetto. we are checking with

have made any arrests or have any new leads. deputies don't believe she had been there for very long and that she most likely knew her killer. clearwater police need your help to find a missing elderly man. 82-year-old bob taylor, we last saw him yesterday at about 3:00 p.m. residents. he usually walks with the assistance of a walker or cane. and police are concerned because of the cold weather. and they believe he may not be wearing shoes. if you recognize him, call police right away. and caught on camera, a shameless criminal stealing from a church collection box. this man. they say he walked into the catholic church in clearwater, took $50. call clearwater police if you know this guy. a horrific bus crash in california is under

it could be linked to driver fatigue. the bus crashed and flipped on the side on the way from los angeles to oakland. two women were killed and nine others were injured. investigators believe the vehicle crashed into safety barrels along the median of the highway before flipping to the side. officials with the california highway patrol report the bus driver admitted he was fatigued at the time of the crash butst unknown if he fell asleep. two firefighters are hurt after battling a huge apartment fire in the center city in philadelphia. the four-alarm fire started in the basement and quickly spread to the roof of the building. more than 100 firefighters dealt with dangerous cold temperatures and strong winds. 22 units in the building were occupied. the cause of the fire is under investigation. 70 people are hurting following the collision of two light rail trains in italy. most of the injured are students who were on their way to school. at this hour, it's still

going in opposite directions on the same track. investigators believe human error is to blame. severe weather continues to affect parts of cuba this morning. take a look at the huge waves hitting sea walls in havana. wow. gale force windses at the the sea surface have blown for more -- winds at the sea surface have blown for more than 30 hours. the severe weather is blamed on subtropical low pressure here in florida which will linger for a few more days. impressive video of the huge waves crashing into cuba's famous sea wall. >> there and we did have the strong cold front come through and behind it, you get the intense winds and you also get a taste of colder air that we're not used to here in the tampa bay area. this morning, most of us in the 30s and some of us below freezing. and here's the hour-by-hour and watch how quickly we actually warm up.

this morning. each hour you will see temperatures go up multiple degrees. 62 at 2:00 p.m. 64 at 3:00. and with sunshine, it should actually be really comfortable outside. and not quite as chilly tonight. we are still around 57 degrees at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow. but heads up friday, we see a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms. 71 thursday and friday. saturday a high of 58 and windy. so for the children's gasparilla parade, bundle the pirates up. and then back to 72 on tuesday. and let's check on traffic on the 8s because it's a cold morning but the roads not looking too bad. a new crash but no injuries involved at hillsborough avenue and sheldon road. be on the lookout for that one. aside from that, construction northbound on i-75 exiting to university parkway. this is in the sarasota area.

virus lives right here in hillsborough. >> and now the local health department is trying to prevent an epidemic. >> reporter: that's right. this is a story getting a lot of attention on social media right now, even the centers for disease control got on facebook to let people know about a travel notice, especially for pregnant women. well the cdc is urging pregnant women and women trying to get pregnant to postpone their travel to 14 countries and territories in central america, south america and the caribbean. this includes vennway vennway -- includes venezuela. neighbors are asked to dump standing water, use repellant and wear protective clothing. victims can be given antibiotics but this virus has to run its course. it can cause babies to be born with small heads because their

doctors are learning more about a condition that can save twins. twin to twin transfusion syndrome must be found quickly or it will be kill the twins. one woman experienced ttes and doctors performed the laser procedure with a 90% chance of just one twin surviving. >> that was devastating. the option was either we would probably have to have surgery or lose both of the babies. >> the laser procedure evened out the blood supply and although the risk of one twin dying was high, both of her twins made it. when you are watching your diet, a cheat day at a restaurant is a treat. but a study found more than 90% of meals from large chain and local restaurants exceed the recommended calories for a single meal.

more snow is expected this morning with wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour. oh. seconds away from 4:48. and now i don't feel cold at all when i step outside. >> and in syracuse, new york, when they have to close schools for three day, it is bad because they are used to snow fall. we are not used to any snow fall. and we're not used to the cold temperatures that we're seeing. in fact, citrus, hernando, pasco away from the coast, your freeze warning goes until 9:00 this morning so you still have several more hours where you could be below freezing. at 8:00, it's going to be cold. all of us in the 30s. right around 39 degrees. the sunshine does do its job today and helps to warm us up, 54 degrees at noon. and feeling great in the sunshine at 3:00 p.m. with 64 degrees. right now, 30 in zephyrhills. 30 in inverness. 31 brooksville. polk county and points south, that's where you start to warm up. in the layer of thin clouds,

manatee counties. so 11 degrees colder in brooksville than just this time yesterday making it the coldest morning yet of the season. but slightly warmer with a bright sunshine in the forecast today. cool overnight but not as cold. nobody even close to freezing. nice and mild into thursday. ahead of friday's cold front which brings showers and possibly strong thunderstorms. and then another batch of cold >> all right. well looking at traffic right now, hillsborough avenue at sheldon road in oldsmar, we the roadway. would want slow you down. and we just got word from fhp, there's debris on the highway, eastbound i-4 right around park city area. caution. no delays though. look again. reminer, northbound i-75 exiting to university parkway, a little bit of construction to be on the lookout for.

well happening today, tampa police are warning gasparilla partyers about its zero tolerance policy. the chief will unvail the presentation this morning at headquarters and officers will take the messages to various schools and groups. police want to make sure everyone stays safe during the celebrations that draws in thousands of people each year. this weekend is the children's parade. and then on saturday, january inevacuate. parade live. it starts at 2:30 and we are streaming it live on wfla.com. all right, it's 4:48. let's check in with leigh. >> and it is going to be cold just a heads up. it's already cold in brooksville at 30 degrees right now. and it will warm up nicely today into the mid-60s. and tonight notice the overnight lows, mid- to upper 40s. and much warmer tonight.
